Abu Dhabi Driving License —
Which Category Are You?
Not everyone needs a Golden Chance. Depending on your country and nationality, you might be able to swap your license directly — with no lessons and no road test. Here is the complete official breakdown.
The 4 Categories — Which One Are You?
Abu Dhabi has four different routes to getting a driving license, depending on what foreign license you hold (if any). Understanding your category before you visit a driving school saves you time and money.
💡 Not sure which category you are? Call us on 800 723 346 — we confirm your eligibility in under 5 minutes, free of charge, before you spend anything.
🔄 Category 1 — Direct Swap (No Lessons, No Test)
If your license falls into this category, you simply bring your documents to the driving school and exchange your foreign license for a UAE license. No training. No road test. The process is handled entirely through paperwork.
🚗 Category 2 — Road Test Only (No Lessons)
This applies to non-GCC nationals who hold a valid GCC-issued driving license. For example: an Indian national who has been living in Saudi Arabia and holds a valid Saudi driving license.
No training lessons are required — just a road test with the Abu Dhabi traffic examiner.
⭐ Category 3 — Golden Chance (Reduced Lessons + Test)
If your license is from a qualifying country but not covered by the direct swap, you are eligible for the Golden Chance — a reduced training program starting from AED 1,500.
Typically 5–10 lessons are required, plus a road test. Significantly cheaper and faster than the full package.
Starting price: AED 1,500 · Tabby installments available · Call 800 723 346 to enroll
⚠️ Australia note: Q / CP1 / CP2 and Probationary licenses are NOT eligible for Golden Chance. Full license required. Call us to confirm your specific Australian license class.
📚 Category 4 — Full Package
The full driving package is for anyone who does not hold a foreign driving license at all — regardless of nationality. This includes first-time drivers from any country.
It does not matter if you are from India, Egypt, the Philippines, or any other country — if you have never held a driving license anywhere in the world, you start with the full package.
❌ Important: Holding a license from a non-qualifying country (e.g. India, Pakistan, Philippines, Egypt) does NOT help you — you still need the full package. What matters is whether you hold a valid foreign license from a qualifying country, not just any foreign license.
Full package starts from AED 3,500 at ALWAFAE. Payment via Tabby installments available.
