The Abu Dhabi Theory Test
45 questions, 30 minutes, and a pass mark higher than most people expect. Here is exactly what you are walking into.
The Abu Dhabi theory test has 45 multiple-choice questions and you must answer at least 36 correctly to pass — that is an 80% pass mark, not the 65–70% quoted on many websites. You get 30 minutes. It is available in Arabic, English, Urdu, Pashto and Malayalam, at five locations across Abu Dhabi.
⚠️ Check any figure you read elsewhere. Several widely-shared guides state the test is 35 questions, or that 23 or 32 correct answers is enough to pass. Those numbers are wrong, and they are wrong in the direction that gets people to walk in underprepared. The pass mark is 36 out of 45. You can afford nine mistakes, not thirteen.

With 45 questions in 30 minutes you have roughly 40 seconds per question. That is comfortable if you know the material and tight if you are reasoning from first principles, which is the practical argument for studying properly rather than relying on general road sense.

Languages — and One Thing to Watch
The theory test itself is available in five languages:
ALWAFAE teaches in English, Arabic, Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi. The test is offered in Arabic, English, Urdu, Pashto and Malayalam. So if you take your lessons in Hindi or Punjabi, you will still need to sit the test in one of the five test languages — most commonly English or Urdu. Worth planning for early rather than discovering on test day.

The theory test is available at five locations across Abu Dhabi:
Four of the five are inside shopping malls, which usually means longer opening hours and easier parking than an industrial-area centre. If you work standard hours, a mall location is often the simpler option.

Questions are drawn from the official Light Vehicle Handbook published by Emirates Driving Company. It runs to eleven subject areas:
The last two — signs and markings — are the largest reference sections in the book and the most heavily represented in questions. They are also the easiest marks to secure, because the answers are memorisable rather than situational.
Sections 4, 5 and 6 catch people out. Questions on fog, aquaplaning, skid recovery and driver fatigue are less intuitive than sign recognition, and are frequently the difference between 34 and 36 correct.

If You Fail — The Retake Rules
Failing is not the end of the process, but there are conditions attached.
Repeated failure is often a reading or comprehension barrier rather than a knowledge gap — someone who knows the roads perfectly well but struggles with written questions under time pressure. The oral format removes that obstacle. It is a support mechanism, not a penalty.

A lot of people search for an Abu Dhabi theory test questions-and-answers PDF. It is worth being straight about what does and does not exist.
What you actually get
When you enrol, you are given the official Light Vehicle Handbook published by Emirates Driving Company. That book is the source the exam questions are drawn from. It is the material worth your time.
What doesn't exist
There is no official public answer key. The question bank is not published, and any PDF claiming to be "the real Abu Dhabi theory test answers" is unofficial.
⚠️ Be careful with unofficial answer PDFs. Most circulating files are years out of date, and several mix Dubai RTA material into Abu Dhabi content — the two authorities are different. Memorising a stale answer key is how people fail a test they had the knowledge to pass. If a source cannot tell you the correct pass mark, do not trust its answers either.
What actually works
- Read the official handbook — particularly the signs and markings sections
- Attend the theory lectures rather than skipping to the test
- Take the mock tests offered in our training packages
- Ask your instructor about anything you got wrong, rather than memorising the right answer
Section 07
How to Prepare
- Treat 80% as the target, not 65%. Preparing for the wrong pass mark is the single most common reason people are surprised on the day.
- Learn signs and markings first. They are the largest and most memorisable part of the syllabus — secure marks before tackling the situational material.
- Do not skip the behaviour and hazard chapters. Fog, skids, fatigue and aquaplaning questions are where borderline candidates lose the marks that matter.
- Sit mock tests under time pressure. 40 seconds per question feels different with a clock running.
- Decide your test language early if you are learning in Hindi or Punjabi.
💡 Theory first pays off twice. Students who take the theory seriously tend to need fewer road lessons, because they arrive already understanding right of way, lane discipline and signs. It is the cheapest part of the process to get right.
